DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Government has officially declared March 28 a special day each year to honor the leadership and contributions of former City Mayor and President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, recognizing his lasting impact on the city and the nation.
This declaration was formalized through Resolution No. 01037-23, Series of 2023, which was certified by Charito Santos, secretary to the Sangguniang Panlungsod and City Government department head, and attested by Councilor Trisha Ann Villafuerte, who served as the temporary presiding officer during the 12th regular session.
On the motion of Councilor Diosdado Angelo Junior Mahipus, with full support from fellow city councilors, March 28 was officially set aside as a day to recognize the remarkable and ongoing contributions of Duterte as a former mayor of Davao City and the 16th President of the Philippines.
The resolution highlights Duterte’s extensive service to the city, tracing his political journey from vice mayor, mayor, and congressional representative before being elected as the country’s leader. Born on March 28, 1945, in Maasin City, Southern Leyte, Duterte is regarded in the resolution as a “living hero” whose legacy continues to inspire Filipinos.
Unanimously adopted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod on March 28, 2023, copies of the resolution were distributed to the offices of the City Mayor, Vice Mayor, and various government departments.
Meanwhile, former presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo earlier revealed that organizers of nationwide gatherings celebrating Duterte’s 80th birthday on March 28 aim to set a new Guinness World Record.
Supporters from Davao City and worldwide stayed late to attend a Mañanita in Duterte’s honor. A crowd gathered outside his residence at Doña Luisa Subdivision before midnight to welcome the occasion.
As part of the celebration, the Mindanao Culinary and Cake Decorating Society presented a nine-layered cake featuring an eagle on top, which was displayed along Roxas Avenue in Davao City on Friday afternoon.
Thousands are expected to gather in Davao City from March 28 to 29 to show their support for Duterte, who is currently detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, facing allegations of crimes against humanity.
