DAVAO CITY – Senator Christopher Lawrence Go visited on Monday morning, October 6, families who lost their homes and belongings in the fire that struck Barangay 21-C, Piapi Boulevard here, assuring them of continued assistance and concern.

Speaking before evacuees gathered at the barangay-covered court, Go said he and his team inspected the affected area and were saddened to learn that some fishermen also lost their boats in the blaze—the second to hit the community in recent years.

“It pains me to see this community suffer once again. I was also here two years ago when the same tragedy struck. I may not be able to answer all needs, but I will do my best to help, and together we will recover,” Go told residents.

The senator highlighted the importance of life and health over material possessions, recalling a parent who asked for help for her child with a heart condition.

“People can wash clothes and earn money again, but a life lost is gone forever. I am here to extend help in every way possible and remind everyone that protecting life and health must always come first,” Go said.

As part of his outreach, Go distributed relief packs and raffle prizes, including men’s and women’s shoes, a watch, a cellphone, a bicycle, and basketballs. He also surprised residents celebrating birthdays with cakes, saying the gesture uplifts their spirits during these trying times.

Barangay Captain Jonard Gabrillo thanked the senator for his presence and aid.

“We are grateful to our very own Senator Bong Go, who has always stood by us in both hardship and comfort—not only for our barangay but for all Davaoeños in need,” Gabrillo said.

City councilors Bonz Andre Militar, Temujin “Tek” Ocampo, and Radge Ibuyan joined the relief efforts.

Ocampo underscored that the aid distributed by their offices came directly from public funds, pointing out that Davao City does not engage in “ghost projects.”

Ibuyan, meanwhile, urged residents to continue practicing “Bayanihan” as they recover.

Go expressed gratitude to local officials, including Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte and First District Rep. Paolo Duterte, for their swift response. He also thanked former President Rodrigo Duterte, acknowledging his role in shaping his public service career.

According to the City Social Welfare and Development Office, around 800 people were displaced after the October 2 blaze destroyed some 150 houses, affecting homeowners and renters.

Evacuation centers were quickly set up at the covered courts of Barangay 21-C and neighboring Barangay 22 to shelter families from Purok 8, particularly those in Blocks 50, 57, and 64.

Go assured residents that his office will continue working with barangay leaders, the city government, and national agencies to provide sustained assistance as families rebuild their lives.
