It’s raining pumpkins! I used to see this only in photos and videos from family and friends abroad. Finally, last week, I got to personally witness and experience a pumpkin festival in Germany. And for our first time, we were brought and treated by my daughter and son-in-law, to the world’s largest pumpkin exhibition… the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival.

What began as a modest pumpkin festival 25 years ago, on the grounds of the Ludwigsburg Residential Palace, considered one of the largest and most stunning Baroque palaces in the Europe, the festival now showcases about 450,000 and 600 varieties of pumpkins. They all come in different sizes, shapes, colors and textures. There are the edible and the ornamental types, elaborately-carved pumpkin sculptures and delicious pumpkin-based dishes, like soup, waffles and other local delicacies. We loved the very aromatic roasted pumpkin seeds, glazed with cinnamon powder. It gives both the Halloween and Christmas vibes!

This annual pumpkin event adopts a different theme each year. For this year, with the theme “Great Cinema”, the beautifully landscape grounds of Ludwigsburg Palace (called the Bloom Palace Gardens), is transformed into a movie set, featuring different film icons, like Mickey Mouse, Harry Potter, Superman, Charlie Chaplin, KingKong, Marilyn Monroe, etc., all made of pumpkins. They’re truly a work of art!

Regardless of age, nationality and whether if you’re a first timer or a returnee, you will definitely enjoy the sights, sounds and smell of the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival. It’s definitely worth visiting.
