Heidelberg At a Glance (Wanderlust by Jay Ledesma)

Strolling down the main street, alleys, bridge, plazas and castle of Heidelberg in a cold, windy day was an enchanting experience. Heidelberg, one of the more popular cities of Germany, is a beautiful quaint city with a unique charm.

The main shopping street in Heidelberg is considered one of the most beautiful and longest pedestrian zones in Europe. As this is a no car zone (only bikes are allowed), it felt safe walking down the main street and alleys, for kids and seniors, like us. Along the main street and between their Bismarckplatz and the market square, are bistros, cafes, restaurants, international chain stores and locally owned boutique stores. I personally love the Kathe Wohlfahrt which sells beautiful and unique Christmas decors all year round.

A must see is what is commonly known and called by the locals as the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke), an arch bridge made of sandstone which connects the Old Town and the Neuenheim district. It was built during the 18th century by Elector Karl Theodor (bridge was officially named after him). It was heavily bombed and damaged during WWII and was reconstructed in July 1947. From the bridge, we had a great view of the Neckar River, the river embankment lined with beautiful houses and the Heidelberg Tower. The sculptures of Elector Karl Theodor, of Roman Goddess Minerva (Goddess of Wisdom) and of John Nepomuk (patron saint of bridges) can be found on the bridge.

Highlight of our Heidelberg day trip was the visit to the Heidelberg Castle. Overlooking the Neckar Valley, it was once the residence of the Counts Palatine and Electors of the House of Wittelsbach, who ruled from the castle for over 400 years. The ruins of the castle is a testament of the grandeur, lavish lifestyle and splendor of the royalties. In the cellar still stands the world’s largest ever filled wine barrel, called the Heidelberg Tun. Once damaged and neglected, the reconstructed castle is now a magical and majestic landmark of Heidelberg.

A second visit to Heidelberg is definitely in the plan!
