Bong Go extols former Sen. Santanina Rasul

In a significant recognition of the late former Senator Santanina Rasul’s contributions to Philippine society, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go co-sponsored a measure honoring her legacy. Inserted into the records during the Senate session on Tuesday, December 3, Go’s speech celebrated Senator Rasul as a trailblazing figure in the nation’s history and a champion for marginalized communities.

“Senator Rasul was a remarkable figure in our nation’s history, being the first Muslim woman elected to the Philippine Senate. Her groundbreaking contributions to legislation and her unwavering commitment to the promotion of peace, education, and the empowerment of women and marginalized communities have left an indelible mark on our society. Hindi po matatawaran ang husay, dedikasyon at pusong naipamalas niya sa serbisyo,” Go stated.

Senator Rasul’s career is marked by her efforts to uplift women, children, and underserved communities, which Go highlighted extensively.

“She held several positions in government, representing Muslims and cultural minorities throughout her public service career. In 1966, she founded the Magbassa Kita Foundation Inc., an organization dedicated to promoting not only literacy but also peace, development, and women empowerment.”

The foundation Senator Rasul created has been instrumental in advancing literacy and fostering peace in the Philippines, particularly among marginalized groups. Go underscored her contributions, saying, “She served as a commissioner representing Muslim and other ethnic minorities and was also a member of the board at the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports in 1986.”

As a dedicated advocate for education, Senator Rasul viewed it as a critical tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering sustainable development.

Go added, “Throughout her distinguished career, Senator Rasul championed causes that uplifted women, children, and underserved communities. She worked tirelessly to promote education, recognizing it as a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty and foster sustainable development. Her dedication to advancing literacy and her efforts to ensure access to quality education continue to inspire generations.”

In closing, Go paid his respects to the late senator’s family and acknowledged her lasting influence.

“Mr. President, ilan lamang po ito sa mga mahahalagang kontribusyon na nagawa ni Senator Rasul. May her soul find everlasting peace. And I offer my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.”

The recognition of Senator Rasul’s life and work serves as a testament to the enduring impact of her efforts in education, peacebuilding, and advocacy for marginalized communities.
