Fake issues don’t sway (LETTERS FROM DAVAO CITY by Jun Ledesma)

Jun Ledesma

We are four months away from election day but all we hear from candidates are either deafening silence and a festival of radio commentaries that feast on fake issues.

Tom Tom Traffic Index used a picture of a traffic mess in Guadalupe Bridge at EDSA to depict Davao City being the most congested city in the Philippines. It undermines the credibility of Tom Tom report which is a concerning discrepancy.

To the election strategists of Karlo Nograles and his phalanx of commentators however the fake traffic index is good enough as a tool to advance the candidacy of Karlo.

I really am amazed with the courage of Nograles to countenance the way his image makers present him to Davao City electorates as an alternative to former Mayor and President Rodrigo Duterte. They are not stopping at using obviously fake reports to buttress their concerted attacks against Duterte who is as quiet as they are vociferous.

Not content with fake Tom Tom report, they recently posted on Facebook a survey purportedly from OCTA Research showing Karlo Nograles as the preferred mayoral candidate with 71% against Rodrigo Duterte with 29%.

Global Daily Mirror may have been taken aback by such incredible disparity it touched base with OCTA Research. As a result OCTA president Ranjit Rye issued a statement on the controversial matter which GDM posted on FB thus:

“We have been informed about alleged pre-election survey results in Davao City that are falsely attributed to OCTA Research. These results, currently circulating on social media and in local print media, are not legitimate. We encourage media organizations and the public to confirm the authenticity of any survey results claimed to be from OCTA Research by contacting us directly. We also would like to ask for the public’s cooperation in refraining from sharing this false information on social media.”

Whatever Nograles and his attack dogs are doing, the former President remains unperturbed. For as long as his adversary is committing atrocious propaganda I personally don’t think Duterte will respond to criticism which are blatantly false.

Davawenyos of course know we have growing traffic problems owing to the unprecedented economic growth of the City. Even then it is far from what is obtaining in that choke point at Guadalupe Bridge along EDSA in Metro Manila. From where I live at Robinsons Highlands, it takes me less than 30 minutes drive to the airport and City hall, 10 minutes to three malls with alternative routes to take.

If there is any valid issue I would underscore is the unexplainable logic why the City Government refuses to restore or, better still, replace the traffic signalization system; and why it would take eons for the City Engineer’s Office to issue building and occupancy permits.

Should there be any primordial issues which FPRRD must do if he goes back to City Hall is to conduct lifestyle check on all officials at the CEO and cut them out fast. His edict before to get applications for permits done within 15 days had been set aside by the insatiable hungry detergents at the CEO.
