Kulot says chess teaches one how to plan ahead

Mayor Juanito “Kulot” Inojales of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental on Saturday extolled the game of chess to participants of the provincial games, saying it teaches players how to plan successfully ahead.

“Contrary to what is believed, chess as a game is not a matter of pushing wood on the board,” he said. “It teaches people how to plan ahead to be able to succeed.”

And as always those who plan two or five moves ahead are most likely to succeed,” he said. “This is the lesson that chess teaches us as we manage our studies, our careers and our lives.”

“Good planning is also the basis for good decision-making,” he said.

Inojales opened the ceremonial moves of the secondary and elementary chess competitions of the provincial games with Batang Pinoy gold medalist Alexis M. Timkiang at the newly-opened Governor Generoso tourism complex in Barangay Chicote.

He also expressed support to the promotion of chess as a grassroots endeavor especially to elementary pupils and high school students.

The competition attracted more than 80 participants from the 10 towns of Davao Oriental.

Hostilities in track and field events, ball games, combat sports also took off simultaneously with the athletic oval of the Sigaboy Central Elementary School as the main venue. This is the second time in 10 years that Governor Generoso played host to the games.

Governor Generoso is also the defending champion of the provincial games, having won the championship in the municipality of Lupon in 2024.

Mayor Inojales said the local government unit has prepared well in ensuring that the games are successful and that the participants are assured of safe and comfortable accommodation.

“May the best players and best team win,” he said. (Jimmy K. Laking)
