Morsels of graft and impeachment (Editorial by Jun Ledesma)

The House Leadership along with the united cabal of the Communist Party of the Philippines political fronts have filed a magma of what they called impeachable offense against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte principally on the disbursements of ₱125-million confidential funds.

If such were to be made the basis of getting rid of government officials the first to go would have been Speaker Romualdez over his controversial ₱1.8-billion travel funds which was exposed in a talk show over SMNI which eventually led to the suspension of the TV Network.

Travel funds, unlike confidential intelligence funds, ought to be fully accountable complete with iteneraries and receipts which have to be divulge in public. In the case of CIF the fact that it is confidential does not require the nitty-gritties of how and who were the recipients as it would place in grave danger those involve in intelligence gathering and consequent actions.

Thus even Ombudsman Samuel Martires even enunciated that he sees no culpable offense as hinted by DOJ Undersecretary Jessie Andres. Martires bluntly told Andres to “shut up”.

But then again the coterie of House Leadership and its attack dogs have their own agenda. For if they are up to their job they could have filed impeachment proceedings against Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, not only on how he used his CIF, why he granted amnesty to the CPP/NPA terrorists and how was the ₱1.3-trillions of funds used in what now turned out to be ghost flood control projects. Add to that the secret sale of several tons of gold bullions from the Central Bank, the transfers of billions of members’ money from SSS, GSIS and Philhealth, among others, to the national government treasury.

Clearly the impeachment proceedings against VP Sara is to effectively silence and remove her as she had bravely stood against the unprecedented corruption in the government and especially in the Executive and Legislative Departments.

In all these disturbing developments that have pushed our beloved country into bankruptsy, a failed state and the resurrection of the bloody armed insurgency of the CPP/NPA. we are watching where the loyalty not only of the Armed Forces of the Philippines is but also how far will the lackadaisical stand of the people who had been numbed by morsels of graft called “ayuda” lasts.
