The beginning of a new chapter (Editorial by Jun Ledesma)

The midterm elections of 2025 is over. We have seen the reversals of fortune and we are seeing the the changes in the political landscape of the 2028 regular polls.

The victors are still in celebratory mood and the euphoria is not just about to ebb and end. With the administration party shattered we expect some dramatic alignments among major political parties affecting local and national alliances.

We have witnessed the radical transition of power and influences in major political hubs in the country. Mindanao, spearheaded by Davao City, has become a solid political bastion of Duterte with VP Sara as its undisputed leader. Cebu is now with PDP-Laban and Manila, had been recouped by Isko Moreno who had aligned with VP Sara.

Moreover there is something else which need to be addressed seriously especially by the Commission on Elections. While it failed to deliver votes to the administration candidates, the distribution of ‘ayudas’, AKAP and other forms of doleouts to win votes should be altogether be outlawed. The House of Representatives has legislated its own sole power to determine who the recipients will be. The strategy is fraught with dubious agenda. In the aftermath of the just concluded elections, we saw administration bets who handles the distribution became instant millionaires while the intended recipients salivate for the crumbs they received.

In the meantime we find solace over the changes of political leaders in Congress and local government units. From the incumbent leadership that much was to be desired, the amount of reforms is much needed from the new crop of leaders we recently elected. It’s the beginning of a new day.
