Rage, rage against the dying of the light. But how can we, oh Dylan Thomas, when all the instrumentalities of the government, including those that are suppose the protect and fight for us now push us into the edge of the bottomless pit of perdition.
Our farmers are dying a slow death for how can they compete with their own government indulging in importation and if the do buy the harvest of farmers palay buy this at a price of ₱13 per kilo?
Our Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises that comprise 99.5 percent of business establishments and employs 63% of the country’s labor force are hit right in the solar plexus with the passage of ₱200 daily wage hike. Together, MSMEs contribute 40% of the gross domestic product of the Philippines.
The double whammy will have a staggering impact on the country which recently resorted to sell rice at subsidized price of ₱20/kilo to stave off social unrest and political erosion. At what price then will the government buy palay from the farmers is an x factor. That promise therefore will only be realized if it is subsidized. For now the price of palay as published in the social media is at ₱13/kilo.
For Marcos to sustain his promise of ₱20/ kilo, he should strictly put NFA to task. He has to refurbish the facilities of NFA. Revive the rice mills, silos and provide it adequate funds to buy farmers produce even at ₱18 per kilo at the ver least. Direct the National Irrigation Administration to repair and maintain irrigation systems. Reboot the Food Terminal Incorporated and its cold storage chain.
But all these requires the heads of government bureaucracy and Congress to minimize their greed. Otherwise the light will be overtaken by the fright of the night.
