DAVAO CITY – Despite being held at the International Criminal Court in The Hague in the Netherlands, former President Rodrigo Duterte continues to command widespread support among Filipinos, according to a recent Pulse Asia survey.

  Marcos Trust rating lowest

The nationwide survey, conducted from May 6 to 9, showed former President Duterte with a 63 percent trust rating, the highest among all political figures in the country.

Vice President Sara Duterte, his daughter, followed with a 50 percent rating, while President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. scored a dismal 32 percentage points. The President brushed aside the Pulse Asia survey results.

Vice President Duterte experienced an insignificant decline in public trust in Luzon and Visayas but received an overwhelming support in Mindanao.

The Dutertes popularity remains strong in Mindanao, with 97 percent of respondents expressing trust in the former Chief Executive and the Vice President.

In contrast, only 3 percent of the people in Mindanao reported trusting President Marcos. The survey also indicated that 58 percent of Filipinos disapproved of Duterte’s handover to the ICC.

Sentiment against the elder Duterte’s detention was strongest in Mindanao, where 96 percent opposed the move. In the Visayas, 60 percent shared that view, followed by 42 percent in Luzon outside Metro Manila and 38 percent within the capital region.

Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced on Monday that he plans to request ICC approval for Duterte to take his oath as mayor of Davao City through a Philippine consul.

Should former President Duterte remain unable to take office, his son Sebastian Duterte, the elected vice mayor, may fulfill mayoral duties until the elected mayor returns to his hometown.

Vice President Sara and Senator Imee are presently in the Netherlands to visit President Duterte. It is rumored that they too will facilitate the oath taking of the former president who won the mayoral race in Davao City with a overwhelming mandate.
