Sen.. Christopher “Bong” Go underscored the importance of Republic Act No. 12246, which declares March 7 of every year a special working holiday in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte, to commemorate its foundation day. Go, one of the authors of the measure, said the law reflects the city’s vibrant local identity and strengthens pride in its history and people.
Go noted how the measure ensures that Samal’s residents can formally recognize the city’s creation. “Para ito sa pagkilala sa ating pinagmulan at sa pagsuporta sa patuloy na pag-unlad ng Island Garden City of Samal.”
The senator welcomed the enactment of RA 12246 which allows Samaleños to come together every March 7 to celebrate their community’s progress. “Mahalaga na taon-taon ay naaalala natin kung saan nagsimula ang ating lungsod at kung paano natin ito naitaguyod,” he emphasized. “Ito ay araw ng pagkakaisa at pasasalamat.”
The Island Garden City of Samal was officially created through Republic Act No. 8471 on January 30, 1998, merging the former municipalities of Babak, Samal (with its center in Peñaplata), and Kaputian into one political and economic unit.
Just a short boat ride across the Davao Gulf—roughly half an hour including the ferry trip from Davao City’s wharf—Samal has become a favored beach and resort destination because of its clear waters and relaxed island atmosphere.
Many travel guides fondly describe Samal as the “summer capital” of the Davao Region, a testament to its breezy island charm and year-round appeal.
“Ang ganitong pagdiriwang ay hindi lamang paggunita sa nakaraan,” Go said, “kundi pagkakataon din para planuhin ang kinabukasan at mas mapalago ang ating ekonomiya.”
Go also recognized the significance of the measure for the city’s tourism and economic growth. He explained that the holiday provides an official occasion to showcase Samal’s natural attractions and its role as a key destination in Davao del Norte. “Makakatulong din ito para mas makilala ang kagandahan ng Samal at maipakita ang yaman ng kultura at likas na yaman ng ating lugar,” he added.
The senator reaffirmed his continued support for initiatives that preserve local heritage and foster unity. “Ang pagkakaroon ng ganitong uri ng batas ay paalala na bawat komunidad ay may mahalagang papel sa pambansang pag-unlad,” he noted.
Go has consistently advanced measures designed to spur growth and improve government services across the Davao Region. He co-sponsored RA 12173, which upgrades the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Mati City, Davao Oriental from a Class D to a Class C district office.
In 2021, Go authored and co-sponsored the measure that became RA 11708, creating the Metropolitan Davao Development Authority (MDDA). The MDDA is tasked with coordinating development planning, transport management, solid waste disposal, urban zoning, land use planning, shelter services, health and sanitation, and public safety across Davao City and its neighboring areas.
Throughout these efforts, Go has repeatedly stressed that inclusive national progress begins with empowering communities outside the capital.
“Sa huli, ang tunay na sukatan ng pag-unlad ay kung paano nito napapabuti ang buhay ng bawat Pilipino, lalo na ang mga nasa malalayong lugar,” he remarked, highlighting his belief that development must be felt in every corner of the country.
