The era of colonial conquests is over and we have ceased to be a colony of Spain over 100 years ago.
However, by surrendering one of our countrymen, a former President at that, to the Europe-based International Criminal Court (ICC) to be tried for crimes allegedly committed within the Philippines against Filipinos, it now appears that our liberation from our “Colonial Masters” was a sham.
We have tacitly admitted that we are still the lowly Indios who should yield to the justice system of our European Masters.
This is the abhorrent implication of that arrest and exile of the former President that has led many apolitical Filipinos to join the Peace and Prayer Rallies staged all over the country and in Filipino communities abroad.
What makes this more repugnant is the public pronouncement of the country’s Secretary of Justice that the trial has to be done in The Hague because our judicial system could not guarantee a fair trial.
The Justice Secretary virtually shot himself in the foot with that statement and he assaulted the Philippine Judicial System of which he is a part of.
This is what makes Filipinos angry.
This is no longer just about former President Rodrigo Duterte.
This is already about our country’s sovereignty, independence and national pride.
