Night Drone Spray & ‘Kanyong Kawayan’ To Keep Birds Away From Sorghum Fields!
One of the biggest challenges that we face in our Sorghum Seed Production is the presence of birds, like the Maya and Alimokon or White Eared Dove, which attack the fields as the grains ripen.
A few birds would not have really caused us a concern but they come in huge flocks and they could damage the whole field in a week’s time.
This problem is not confined to us because I also saw this challenge in Texas when I and my son, Imman, visited the Sorghum Seed production field of Scott Seed Company in Amarillo.
Scott Seed adopted a system where at a given time, an instrument would create a popping sound to scare the birds away.
In our case, we will adopt a system which other farmers said was very effective in driving the birds away and this is by spraying the Sorghum field with AMO Foliar Fertilizer.
In the experience of Nueva Ecija rice farmers, AMO sprayed on the rice fields protected the grains from bird attack.
As a back-up plan, I have asked the boys in the farm to craft a Bamboo Cannon or Kanyong Kawayan in lieu of the pop gun used in Texas.
We will soon find out if these measures will really work.
This is what makes farming challenging and exciting.
