City council welcomes new DepEd-11 Director

DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Council officially welcomed Maria Ines C. Asuncion the new Regional Director of the Department of Education–11, citing her extensive experience in education and reaffirming the city’s commitment to working closely with the agency.

Councilor Antoinette Principe, chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, highlighted Asuncion’s decades of service in public education during the council’s 27th regular session at Sangguniang Panlungsod.

In her privilege speech, the councilor described the DepEd-Davao’s newly appointed regional director as a respected education leader whose career has been closely linked to the growth and development of education in the Davao Region.

Principe noted that Asuncion is no stranger to the region, having previously served as an assistant regional director of DepEd-Davao before she was appointed regional director. She added that the director had risen from a teacher to her current post.

“Asuncion’s rise from classroom teacher to school principal, Schools Division Superintendent, assistant regional director, and now regional director reflects her competence, integrity, and commitment to public service,” Principe said.

The DepEd-Davao director was also cited for promoting quality education, literacy, inclusive learning, and the welfare of learners and educators following his recognitions for supporting learner-centered programs, strengthening school communities, and promoting excellence in education.

Principe emphasized that education is a shared responsibility among schools, local government units, families, and communities, stressing the importance of continued collaboration to improve learning outcomes.

The councilor said the Davao City Government values its long-standing partnership with DepEd in ensuring that children have access to quality education and opportunities to reach their full potential.

City officials wished Asuncion success in leading education. They expressed confidence that the partnership between the city and DepEd-Davao would continue to grow under Asuncion’s leadership and benefit learners across the region.

Asuncion presented the city’s basic education profile to the City Council, highlighting the city’s major contribution to education in the Davao region. Davao City has 445,379 learners, accounting for nearly one-third of the DepEd-11 student population.

The DepEd regional director underscored the city’s role in advancing quality, accessible, and inclusive basic education through the combined efforts of schools, the local government, and education partners.
