Mindanao, Philippines — Sambisig Mindanao slammed ghost projects and substandard infrastructure as “crimes against humanity,” blaming corrupt politicians for the floods that continue to devastate communities.
“Every flood that devastates our communities is not simply the work of nature, but the direct result of greed, neglect, and betrayal by those entrusted to lead us,” declared Cecile Villarente, Founder of Sapnay Babae and member of Sambisig Mindanao. “Time and again, our people are left homeless, hungry, and grieving, while billions are pocketed through ghost projects and substandard infrastructures. These are not accidents of weather; these are engineered disasters born of corruption.”
Billions of pesos intended for flood control and disaster resilience have instead lined the pockets of scoundrels in the Philippine Construction Industry under the directives of corrupt politicians in Congress. The group emphasized that accountability must go beyond contractors—pointing squarely to the political masterminds behind these crimes.
Echoing this, Karl Yngojo, Sambisig Founding Member also representing BRAVE Mindanao (Budget Reform Advocates for Village Empowerment), added: “Each flood that drowns our communities is a crime scene. The culprits are not just the ghost projects of crooked contractors. The true masterminds are our corrupt politicians, and the victims are our people. We are not just calling for immediate reforms; what we need now is a reckoning. This is no longer a plea for mercy; it is a demand for justice.”
Sambisig Mindanao is rallying public vigilance and resistance, urging Filipinos to demand genuine accountability from their leaders. The group insists that silence in the face of corruption is complicity, and that people’s collective action can prevent further devastation of lives and communities. In this spirit, Sambisig Mindanao calls on all citizens to join mass protest actions across different parts of Mindanao until justice is served and genuine change is realized.
